Apprenticeship Spotlight: Fahd Mahmood

25 January 2022

Joining Howard Civil Engineering as an apprentice on one of our most high-profile schemes to date is no mean feat. Trainee Engineer Fahd Mahmood did exactly that when he joined us on our Hard Ings Road scheme in 2018 whilst completing his apprenticeship.

“I was always interested in construction buildings and the works associated with the civil engineering world from a very early age,” he said when reflecting on why he was drawn towards the construction industry.

“I did quite a bit of travelling and witnessed the construction of some very large-scale projects such as skyscrapers and power stations. That is what got me interested in this field,” he continued. “Then, at the age of 16, I decided to look for a position as a civil engineer and luckily I managed to get [an apprenticeship].”

Fahd is positive that his apprenticeship experience has been a vital element in his career as an engineer.

“My apprenticeship experience has been delightful,” he said. “I feel I have gained good skills and experiences at [a] quicker pace because of my apprenticeship, and this will ultimately put me in a stronger position in the future.”

So, what exactly made Howard Civil Engineering so attractive to Fahd when looking to continue his apprenticeship?

“The variety of projects [Howard Civil Engineering] undertake[s],” he said simply. “These can range from structural buildings and houses to bridges and roads.”

Since joining the company in 2018, Fahd has flourished in his role and is now a fully qualified engineer working on our complex Greengates junction widening scheme.

“Personally, I [have] received a great understanding of the real construction environment while working for Howard [Civil Engineering],” he said. “I have settled into the company well and have been involved in the construction of large-scale highway projects.”

Keep up the good work, Fahd! We can’t wait to see what the future holds for you here at Howard Civil Engineering.
