Howard Plant Hire, a division of Howard Civil Engineering, are currently seeking experienced plant fitters in response to an increased workload. The right candidate will be both yard and field based, and able to operate in our current areas of work: South and West Yorkshire. During the probation period you will only be yard based.
Job Role
- Conduct servicing & repairs aiming for maximum machine reliability and a high standard of plant maintenance that always meets or exceeds our customers’ needs regarding safety
- Inspect machines at every opportunity and report observed damage, wear, and defects appropriately
- Diagnose, service, and repair any broken or faulty machinery
- Ensure all tasks in the depot and site environments are conducted to the requirements of the company health and safety policy and comply with company rules and procedures related to health and safety
- Provide consultation on correct operation and daily maintenance measures to the machine operators
- Liaise with management to ensure stock is replenished adequately
- Keep logs of work, in addition to completing job sheets and weekly labour allocation reports
- Ensure job sheet contains a comprehensive description of parts and oils used, as well as a detailed account of labour hours including travel & waiting time, in addition to repair time & disposing of waste
- Ensure supplier delivery notes are handed promptly to the Hire Desk Assistant
- Facilitate occasional deliveries requested by the Hire Desk
- Carry out repairs on the company fleet, which consists of small to medium-sized vans. Our van assets are Peugeot Partners ranging from 16 to 23 plates – having previous experience with this vehicle is beneficial
- Other heavy plant assets include: Excavators (Komatsu, Doosan, Kobelco, Takeuchi & Volvo), Dumper Trucks (Wacker Neuson, Thwaites), Trench Compactor (Wacker Neuson, Bomag) and Rollers (Bomag). Previous experience with this machinery is also beneficial

- To be reactive and proactive towards repairs/stock/health & safety etc
- Adopt a team mentality and help colleagues if required
- Ideally provide your own tools

Requirements
- Previous experience working on heavy plant vehicles is crucial for success
- Vast knowledge of plant machinery, including hydraulic, electrical and mechanical systems
- Competent with the service and repair of plant & vehicles
- A recognised trade qualification is beneficial – Level 2/3 in plant maintenance or similar
- A valid clean driving license

Howard Plant Hire, a division of Howard Civil Engineering, is currently seeking an experienced Workshop Manager in response to an increased workload. The yard is situated in Seacroft, Leeds with a fleet of small commercial vans, HGV’s, grab wagons and a variety of heavy plant. Previous experience as a depot or workshop manager is crucial to the role and you must have managed a team of fitters & drivers.
Job Role
- As Workshop Manager control and manage a small team of mechanics and drivers, instruct and manage their workload effectively
- Organise the efficient and expedient repair and maintenance of the plant and transport fleet
- Ensure that all fitters’ repair tasks are allocated Syrinx work order numbers and the closing job sheets capture all labour hours and parts used
- Ensure compliance of haulage legislation (CPC Road haulage)
- Ensure off-hired plant is inspected and any damage or shortage is reported and quoted for in a timely manner. Repairs must restore safety features and preserve asset value.
- Collaborate with manufacturers to resolve technical issues
- Carry out regular Tool Box Talks and record attendance
- Ensure the Syrinx system is utilised for recording all machine repairs and the planning of maintenance and inspections
- Ensure that procedures in place or introduced are followed to allow the effective capture of the information required to manage the repair and maintenance activities
- Implement and maintain effective maintenance schemes for all fleet plant and vehicles
- Coordinate LOLER and PUWER inspections of all plant and transport and ensure certificates are saved to Syrinx folders
- Schedule and oversee all workshop activities to ensure optimum cost efficiency and maximum availability
- Communicate details of breakdowns and the progress of ongoing repairs at the daily briefings
- Assist site managers with plant issues and other requests where possible
- Procure parts and consumables from the most cost-effective sources
- Ensure purchase orders are raised for all parts, consumables and services and the order number is communicated to the supplier at the time of ordering
- Follow up on the progress of parts, service and material orders to delivery
- Investigate invoice queries and resolve them promptly with suppliers
- Ensure workshop consumables and fitters’ van stocks are kept at a reasonable level
- Ensure supplier delivery notes and worksheets are handed promptly to the Hire Desk Assistant to allow the receipt of goods and services on Syrinx and the accurate allocation of fitters’ labour
- Make recommendations relating to the acquisition of new and replacement plant
Requirements
- At least 5 years in a similar role as Workshop Manager
- Successful and proven progression (fitter – supervisor – manager)
- NVQ in plant maintenance or equivalent
- People management skills
- Willing to evoke positive change
- Awareness of plant and vehicle legislation and policies
Package
- £55,000 – £60,000 per annum based on experience
