The award recognises Hayley’s hard work, commitment and progress since joining HCE as a Pre-Construction Apprentice in August 2024. Her success follows Daniel Heffernan’s achievements at last year’s awards, marking the second consecutive year that an HCE apprentice has received recognition at the prestigious event.
Building a career in quantity surveying
Hayley began her apprenticeship at HCE while studying for her Level 4 Construction Quantity Surveying Technician qualification at Leeds College of Building, achieving distinctions before progressing to higher-level study.
Working within HCE’s pre-construction team, she is developing practical experience in estimating and early project planning, including preparing quantity take-offs, calculating first-principles rates, obtaining quotations and assessing design changes.
Her experience also includes contributing to the £1.9 million Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) facility at Airedale General Hospital, delivered for VINCI Construction. Hayley worked on an attenuation tank package and supported the commercial handover, applying her developing knowledge to a live construction project.
Her interest in the industry was encouraged by her father, who works as an estimator. Since joining HCE, she has continued to build on that early interest, developing the technical knowledge and practical skills needed for a career in quantity surveying.
Peter Howard, Pre-Construction Director at Howard Civil Engineering, works closely with Hayley and has seen her development first-hand. He said:
“I’ve seen how much Hayley has developed since joining us. She’s keen to learn, asks the right questions and is increasingly confident in applying her knowledge to the work we do. She’s also making a valuable contribution to the pre-construction team while continuing her studies, balancing the demands of both with real commitment.
“Winning this award is well deserved and recognises the effort she puts into developing her skills. We’re proud to support Hayley as she progresses in her career, and it’s particularly pleasing to see another HCE apprentice recognised at the BIG Awards for the second year running.”
Investing in the next generation
HCE has a longstanding partnership with Leeds College of Building and recognises the value of apprenticeships in developing skilled, knowledgeable professionals. By giving apprentices the opportunity to learn from experienced colleagues while contributing to real projects, the business helps them build confidence, develop their capabilities and establish rewarding careers.
HCE is committed to supporting the next generation of construction professionals through structured training, practical experience and opportunities for progression. Apprenticeships are an important part of this approach, helping the business develop its own talent while contributing to the future skills of the wider construction industry.
Hayley’s award is a well-deserved recognition of the progress she has made so far, and everyone at HCE congratulates her on her achievement.
We look forward to seeing her continue to develop her skills and make her mark in quantity surveying.
