BACKGROUND
Now complete, Victoria Gate houses a flagship 21,000m² John Lewis store alongside an elegantly designed two-street arcade with 30 stores, restaurants, cafes, and a casino. A multi-storey car park also provides spaces for up to 800 cars.
Howard Civil Engineering was awarded the drainage, substructure and superstructure civil engineering works. Key constraints in the development of this city-centre site were its proximity to local businesses, working alongside other contractors, and utilising every square metre of developable footprint of the site. The programming and sequencing of the various phases was been paramount.

Excavation to expose piles and contiguous piled walls (7,000m³)
Reinforced concrete foundations
Reinforced concrete foundations including pile caps and ground beams (2,000m³)
Reinforced concrete structures
Reinforced concrete structures including 5 cores up to 6 storeys high with climbing formwork (800m³)
Reinforced concrete basement structure
Reinforced concrete basement structure with reinforced concrete walls (single and two-sided)
Extensive temporary works scheme
Extensive temporary works scheme to support a contiguous piled wall and capping beam
Suspended reinforced concrete
Suspended reinforced concrete soffit works
Insitu concrete ground
Insitu concrete ground and upper floor slabs (4,800m³)
Rebar and mesh
750 tonnes rebar, 18,000m² mesh
Drainage
Drainage including Section 104 outfall works within the highway, cast iron products, pumping station, attenuation tanks
