Greengates Junction Newsletter No 2

07 August 2020

Newsletter No 2. Week Commencing Monday 10th August.

First published Friday 7th August 2020

This newsletter is to provide you with an update on the Greengates Junction Improvement works.

Progress, the past two weeks

We have now successfully established our site compound on Stockhill Road, at the former site of Albion House, where we will be based for the remainder of the works. We are pleased to say that works to prepare Greengates Junction for improvement are progressing well.

Our site compound on Stockhill Road and the P-Loop area of the junction opposite Costa Coffee and the war memorial.

Our main working area in the past two weeks has been the P-Loop area. We have erected fencing around this section to allow the vegetation to be removed, which will enable us to commence earthworks, deep drainage works and the dismantling of the wall.

We have also completed a short-term operation removing trees adjacent to Optegra Eye Hospital, which is not a main working area at this stage.

Along New Line South, you will have noticed that we have commenced vegetation clearance opposite the stretch of road running from Greggs to Elder Street under traffic and pedestrian management measures. These measures have now been removed but residents, pedestrians and road users can expect theses measures to be implemented again during this next period of work.

Passersby will also notice fencing has also been erected on Harrogate Road between Chillchicks and A Smith Opticians which will allow us to safely undertake works to form a new entrance to Farmfoods.

Fencing on Harrogate Road at what will be the the new entrance to Farmfoods, and clearance works along New Line South.

The next two weeks

Over the next two weeks, we are looking forward to continuing works to clear the P-Loop area which borders Asda, Greengates House and 830/830a Harrogate Road. Please note that operations within this area will increase from the middle of week commencing 10th August onwards as we undertake excavation works and masonry removal ahead of drainage works.

Traffic management measures will be in place along New Line from Elder Street to the Costa Coffee corner of the junction as we remove existing stonework to facilitate road widening. Residential properties along this section will be affected as we commence the site clearance works, however we have notified all affected properties of these works and encourage residents to contact us if they have any questions or queries. Please rest assured that although we are removing the masonry works, these stones will be stored and reused to form new walls later in the scheme.

During the next two weeks, we will be continuing work to the P-Loop area.

Temporary traffic lights will be in place on Sunday 9th August, and possibly Sunday 16th August, as we remove trees alongside Farmfoods and the war memorial.

Please be aware that narrow lane traffic management measures will be in place to ensure the safety of operatives and pedestrians, meaning the arm of the junction from New Line alongside Greggs and Core Gym will be reduced to two lanes instead of three using traffic cones. The pedestrian crossing outside Asda will remain open until we commence works to this area, at which time the pedestrian crossing will then be relocated to the entrance of Sainsbury's for a short period until the walls have been removed.

The bus stop outside Asda (nr 45018186) will be closed for a period of time to facilitate these works. A temporary bus stop will be in place located just after the Elder Street crossing.

Please note that the existing traffic lights at Greengates Junction will be altered by Bradford Council in the near future to encourage a more efficient flow of traffic, which will ease congestion and create a safer environment for us to commence further phases of the improvement scheme.

We will also continue the works to construct the new entrance for Farmfoods.
As this work progresses, there will be a requirement to implement traffic and pedestrian measures to connect the new entrance to the existing carriageway. This will include the closure of the footpath in this area and Harrogate Road being narrowed in the vicinity of the new entrance.

Weekend working - Sunday 9th and Sunday 16th August

The trees alongside Farmfoods and the war memorial will be removed on Sunday 9th August under temporary traffic lights. We are hopeful these trees will be removed in one shift; however, we will continue work on Sunday 16th August if we are unable to complete these works on Sunday 9th August. We will also remove some trees on the northern section of Harrogate Road which may require temporary traffic lights, on Sunday 16th August.

Rest assured Bradford Council will plant new trees in various locations towards the end of the scheme, including inside the P-Loop area.
